You do not have to quarantine your sick child, but try to
restrict interaction between him and other family members. Even after
he is feeling better, he may still be contagious.
The swine flu virus is spread when someone touches the virus particles
and then rubs their eyes, or touches their nose or mouth. The swine
flu virus can stay alive on surfaces for 2 - 8 hours.
Wipe surfaces in your home that may be contaminated. Don't just clean
the obvious places like door handles, kitchen counters and bathrooms.
Also clean toys, computer keyboards and cell phones.
Use common household disinfectants. Follow the directions on the product label for cleaning instructions.
Dishes and utensils used by an infected person do not need to be washed
separately, but they should not be shared with healthy family members.
Heat kills the virus, so use hot water and soap when washing.
Linens and clothing can be washed with regular household laundry detergent. Dry on a heat setting.
If your child is sneezing and coughing, put on an over-shirt when you
are with them. You can remove it when you leave the room. That way
any viral particles that may be clinging to your clothing won't be
transferred to your other family members if they touch or hug you.
Speak to your doctor, and familiarize yourself with warning signs that
may indicate your child needs immediate medical attention. If your
child begins to have any of the symptoms listed here, take him to the
emergency room immediately:
* Difficult time waking or interacting
* Not wanting to be held
* Not drinking fluids
* Persistent vomitting
* Any blueish or gray tone to skin
* Trouble breathing
